What Are Negative Items on a Credit Report? Complete Guide

Published March 28, 2026 · PARSEUR 10X Team · 8 min read

Negative items (also called derogatory marks) are entries on your credit report that indicate you've had trouble managing credit. They're the primary reason scores drop and can affect everything from loan approvals to apartment applications.

Late Payments

Impact: High (60-110 points) — Reported when you're 30, 60, 90, or 120+ days past due. The later the payment, the worse the damage. A 90-day late hurts far more than a 30-day late. How to fix: Send a goodwill letter to the creditor requesting removal.

Collection Accounts

Impact: Very High (100-150 points) — When a creditor gives up collecting and sells your debt to a collection agency. Even small amounts ($50-100) can devastate your score. How to fix: Debt validation or pay-for-delete.

Charge-Offs

Impact: Very High (100-150 points) — When a creditor writes off your debt as a loss, typically after 180 days of non-payment. The account stays on your report even after being charged off. How to fix: Dispute accuracy, negotiate a settlement with deletion agreement.

High Credit Utilization

Impact: Medium-High (30-70 points) — Using more than 30% of your available credit. This isn't technically a "negative item" but it significantly impacts your score. How to fix: Pay down balances or request credit limit increases.

Hard Inquiries

Impact: Low-Medium (5-10 points each) — Each time a lender checks your credit for a new application. Multiple inquiries in a short period can add up. How to fix: Dispute unauthorized inquiries. Legitimate ones fall off after 2 years.

Bankruptcies

Impact: Severe (150-200+ points) — Chapter 7 stays for 10 years, Chapter 13 for 7 years. How to fix: Ensure all included accounts are reporting correctly post-bankruptcy.

Judgments and Tax Liens

Impact: Severe — Court judgments and unpaid tax liens can remain for 7+ years. How to fix: Pay the judgment/lien and request an updated report, or dispute inaccuracies.
